Ceramics are an important and unique craft in Indian civilization. “Khurja pottery,” traditional Indian pottery dates back to the 14th century when, as legend tells us, wounded soldiers from Timur’s army retreated, bringing the craft to the Bulandshahr area in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Materials and process
Clay is a natural material with an exceptional ability to be molded by hand with methods that have been passed down for generations. New ideas and technical developments have expanded the creative possibilities. Carrying on their forefathers’ work, you can find craftspeople preparing and molding clay, dying, and decorating their creations, adding glazes for both shine and strength, and firing the products in kilns to stone perfection.
