Moradabad

Moradabad, about 100 miles east of Delhi, flourished under British rule in the early 19th century, becoming the brass capital. The Brits sent brass plates, cups, and statues abroad, making Moreadabad’s artisans highly revered in India and abroad. However, India’s metal-based arts date back as far as 3000 BC. 

Over the centuries, all kinds of techniques have been used to shape the metal: casting, beating it and pounding it with dies. In order to mold brass, artisans continue to use the technique of sand casting, a process using sand to create a mold into which molten brass is poured. After the metal cools, the sand mold is broken to reveal the finished design.
